Brewer Street Reconstruction Project

Project No. 42-318/L042-001
Project Location Plan

Project Information:

The reconstruction of Brewer Street from Main Street (State Route 517) to Jefferson Lane (one properly east of Jefferson Lane) is currently under construction.  Project funding is from the Surface Transportation Program administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation, Local Roads Group.  Additional funding is provided through the Local Transportation Capital Improvement (LOTCIP) funded by the State of Connecticut and administered by the Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG).

The project will reconstruct approximately 3,200 feet of Brewer Street which consists of two separate project numbers due to funding sources.  Project No. 42-318 is approximately 2,000 feet in length, beginning at Main Street (S.R. 517) and extending to nearly 200 feet east of Glenn Road, and includes the replacement of Bridge No. 042012 over Pewterpot Brook.  Project No. L042-001 begins at approximately 200 feet east of Glenn Road and extends approximately 1,200 feet to the east, ending 150 feet east of Jefferson Lane.  Construction plan sheets can be found at the bottom of this page (from the final design).

The improvements include full-depth roadway reconstruction and adding granite curbing to both sides of the road.  A five-foot sidewalk and a grass strip will be reconstructed on the southern side of Brewer Street.  On the north side of the road, a five-foot sidewalk and grass strip will be installed for approximately two hundred feet at the western project limits.  Improvements also include new ADA ramps, signing and pavement markings and mid-block crosswalks with concrete pads at the bus stop locations.  The existing drainage system along the limits of the project will be replaced with new systems.  The radius at the southeast corner of the intersection with Main Street will be modified to accommodate the WB-62 design vehicle. The exiting signal at the intersection with Contractors Road and Glenn Road will be replaced with new equipment. Contractors Road will be modified to include a right turn slip ramp onto Brewer Street and accommodate turning movements for the WB-67 design vehicle.

UPDATED Detour Information (as of November 2023):

In order to replace the bridge over Pewterpot Brook, a portion of Brewer Street will be closed to through traffic starting Monday, May 1, 2023.  The closure will remain in place through Memorial Day 2024

Work has been suspended for the winter season 2023-24 due to unanticipated delays related to the work by utilities on their infrastructure, recent low temperatures, and material (asphalt and concrete) temperature restrictions.  The best quality construction (and least cost to the Town) has resumed. The bridge site will be secured with fencing to restrict access to the unfinished bridge.  Between Glenn Road/Contractor Road and Mill Road (the closed portion of Brewer Street), the contractor will pave areas to allow the DPW to plow and residents to access their driveways.

The closure is limited to the section of Brewer Street between Mill Road and Glenn Road/Contractors Road, but drivers should seek alternate routes if using Brewer Street as a through road.  The primary detour for through traffic will be Maple Street, using Forbes Street and Main Street/High Street.  The traffic signal at the Main/Maple/Broad Street intersection is scheduled for modifications that will address the left-turn issues from Main Street.  Until those modifications are complete, east-bound traffic is requested to use High Street and Broad Street to access Maple Street detour.    Local traffic can access properties to the east of the closure (east of Glenn Road/Contractors Road) and west of the closure (west of Mill Road).  An emergency access (temporary road) will be in place for Fire Department vehicles housed at Fire House No. 5, located to the east of the closure.  All drivers are encouraged to avoid the construction area and seek alternate routes to their intended destinations through November 2024, when the construction is expected to be complete.
