This week the Town of East Hartford joined the nation in celebrating the National Public Works Week from May 19 through May 25. The celebration, established by the American Public Works Association, recognizes the contributions made by Public Works Departments in communities nationwide. This year's theme, "It Starts Here," highlights the important role Public Works employees play when it comes to weather-related events and in providing varied core services, executed by its dedicated crews. Roadway repair and paving, refuse and recycling, parks and cemetery maintenance and beautification all improve the quality of life in the community.

“The Town of East Hartford has an amazing team of dedicated Public Works professionals who work hard every day to make East Hartford a cleaner, safer and better community,” said Mayor Marcia Leclerc. “Although their work is not often at the forefront, it is essential to the success of our great town as they provide vital services to the community.”

In recognition of Public Works Week 2019, East Hartford Public Works expanded transfer station hours and promoted clean and green community cleanup and electronic/textiles recycling events at East Hartford High School, Burnside Avenue and the Mayberry Village neighborhood. Public Works coordinated equipment parades at two elementary schools, Annie Norris and Dr. Thomas O'Connell schools. Over 1500 children, teachers and administrators viewed two parades of large equipment, held on May 20 and May 23, and interacted with Public Works employees at a touch-a-truck event that followed.

"The equipment parades allowed students an enrichment opportunity without having to leave their school setting,” said Principal of O’Connel School Greg Fox. “Young children find the scale and power of large equipment exciting. They learn that Public Works uses these huge tools to keep East Hartford clean and green. Students are also reminded they must be partners with Public Works in the fight to end litter and in the goal of keeping our Town beautiful."

It is fitting to honor, acknowledge and recognize the skills and contributions of Public Works.
