Ground Broken for Lowe's and Wayfair Distribution Centers at Rentschler Field

Long-Awaited Development to Create Over 1,000 New Jobs

Mayor Mike Walsh and National Development Managing Partner Ed Marsteiner were joined by Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Congressman John Larson, and other state and local officials on Monday, March 6, 2023, to officially break ground on National Development's Logistics & Technology Park at Rentschler Field.  Marsteiner announced that hardware and home improvement retailer Lowe's and online home furnishings retailer Wayfair have committed to be the two main tenants for the development's two logistics warehouses, both of which will be sized over one million square feet.  The warehouses are expected to be completed by late 2024.  Two additional buildings are planned as part of the complex for high-tech manufacturing, which would create high-paying employment opportunities.  The development is expected to create over 1,000 new jobs in total.

Located adjacent to Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field, the home of UConn Huskies Football, and Cabela's, the property has been underutilized since Pratt & Whitney's Rentschler Field airfield closed in 1999.  Unlike many other local distribution warehouse developments, the site is largely insulated from the surrounding neighborhood.  It benefits from easy access to I-84.

“We welcome National Development, Lowe’s, and Wayfair, and the vital economic relief they will deliver to my community in the form of jobs, material tax and fee revenue,” Mayor Walsh said at the event. “This is the start of the long-awaited revitalization of Silver Lane with more coming at Concourse Park and Silver Lane Plaza.”
