National Public Works Week in East Hartford

National Public Works Week in East Hartford

Nationally, Public Works Week is celebrated May 21-25, 2018; however, East Hartford’s Department of Public Works and Public Library are teaming up to host a series of events throughout the month not only to help residents with their cleaning needs, but also to give them a glimpse into the daily operations of our dedicated crews.

Please note that on Saturdays May 5, 12, 19 and 26, the Public Works Office located at 61 Ecology Drive, will be open for Spring Bulky Waste Permit Registration and bulky waste collection from 8 am to 1:45 pm.

On Monday, May 14th at 10:00am, DPW will host a Parade of Vehicles at Goodwin Elementary School, 1235 Forbes Street. DPW has “adopted” Goodwin School for the next year to develop a relationship that will foster an understanding among students and their families of the role of Public Works in the community. The Parade of Vehicles is intended to show children various pieces of equipment and how, in the hands of our employees, the equipment has an impact on their quality of life. In addition, our Parks Department will be working with the school to install planters to be watered and pruned by the students.

The partnership with Goodwin School will also promote awareness of the number of recycling programs available in Town. In fact, the students have already begun to recycle milk and juice cartons in conjunction with the Board of Education food services company. DPW will be on hand throughout the year to build on their recycling success, to mentor, and serve as reading tutors and role models for the students.

During the week from May 14th-18th, you can learn more about Public Works functions at the East Hartford Public Library at 840 Main Street. The Library will have a display of books and reference materials dedicated to Public Works. They will also have a Public Works Truck Wheel for residents to spin, test their knowledge, and win a door prize. Children are invited to come and try on hard hats and construction vests, and take their picture with Chipper, the Public Works Mascot. For additional information on Library programs, please call (860) 291-4330.

On Saturday, May 19th from 9am – 12pm, the Department will host an Open House “Touch-A-Truck” event at 61 Ecology Drive. At the Open House, the Department will have a Welcome Tent with educational information on services provided by the Town to promote a clean community. Additionally, administrative offices will be open for those who are looking to purchase a bulky waste permit, or to dispose of items at the Transfer Station. For this event, we invite all residents to bring a canned food item to donate to the Food Bank.
