East Hartford to Recognize National Public Works Week with Educational Online Campaign, Volunteering Efforts

DPW Week

East Hartford, CT—The Town of East Hartford joins the nation in celebrating the National Public Works Week from May 17 through May 23. The celebration, established by the American Public Works Association (APWA), recognizes the contributions made by Public Works Departments in communities nationwide.

This year's theme, "The Rhythm of Public Works," challenges APWA members and citizens to think about their communities as a symphony of essential services, working in concert to create a great place to live, work and raise a family.

“The Town of East Hartford is proud to have an amazing team of dedicated Public Works professionals with a collaborative spirit,” said Mayor Marcia Leclerc. “They keep our community moving by leading essential infrastructure projects and providing vital services, while maintaining our Town attractive and functioning.”

In recognition of National Public Works Week, East Hartford’s public works staff are demonstrating their commitment to the community by providing volunteer support at the FoodShare distribution site at Rentschler Field for two weeks in May.

“Although traditional public works events have been canceled due to the pandemic, East Hartford Public Works professionals chose to celebrate National Public Works Week by supporting those in need in our community,” said John P. Lawlor, Director of East Hartford Public Works. “I’m proud of those department members who stepped forward to show their support to our community.”

Additionally, this year, East Hartford Public Works has partnered with the East Hartford Public library to create an educational social media campaign, familiarizing residents with vital operations of Public Works and some of the services offered by the department. Throughout the National Public Works week, the library will be sharing interesting facts and valuable resources about public works and their charge, while educating residents about litter prevention and elimination as well as proper recycling efforts on its official Facebook page @easthartfordpubliclibrary.

Finally, the East Hartford Public Works Department would like to remind residents that the transfer station remains open and operates on a regular schedule with the goal of supporting residential spring cleaning efforts. The Transfer Station is open Monday, Tuesday, and Friday from 7:15 a.m. to Noon and 12:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. (holidays excluded), and the first and third Saturdays of the month from 8:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. (holidays excluded). The transfer station is closed on Wednesday and Thursdays.

The Town of East Hartford encourages all to honor, acknowledge and recognize the vital role that Public Works professionals plays in our community.
