Keeping East Hartford Beautiful

mayor's cleanup

Although it might seem like it has been a long time coming, spring is in the air, at last! With the change of season comes Earth Day, a worldwide celebration in support of environmental protection. Earth Day is recognized annually by a series of environmentally-friendly events to demonstrate appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds us every day, and the Town of East Hartford is excited to be part of these activities.

In the spirit of advocating for a cleaner and safer environment, I would like to ask residents, students, business owners and community members to do their part to help us keep East Hartford beautiful by volunteering at the Mayor’s Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 18, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. This year's cleanup will take place along Burnside Avenue and into Mayberry Village. Volunteers will meet at the East Hartford Middle School, located at 777 Burnside Avenue. I cannot think of a better way to show our support and appreciation for the environment, than by dedicating our time and effort to improve it.

Additionally, to support residential spring cleaning efforts and encourage environmentally-friendly ways of recycling for East Hartford residents, the town offers an abundance of resources and opportunities such as hazardous waste collection, clothing and textile recycling through the Pink Bag Program, paint and used oil recycling, and much more. For a complete list of acceptable recyclable items please visit www.easthartfordct.gov/public-works. The Department of Public Works Transfer Station and administrative offices will be open every Saturday in May from 8AM to 1:45PM to assist those wishing to clean up winter debris, spruce up their properties and recycle unwanted items. During these extended transfer station hours residents will be able to purchase bulky waste permits, required for the transfer station and make appointments for curbside pickups on their regular waste collection day.

The East Hartford community has a long and proud history of working together towards a common goal and I hope you can join me once again in revitalizing and beautifying our town.
