Citizen Academy

It was a pleasure and an honor to be in attendance at the East Hartford Citizen Academy graduation on October 24 at the Police Department and see 20 individuals receive their graduation certificates.

The Graduates of the 10th Citizen Academy session were Cynthia Alex, Cynthia Beaupre, Evered Campbell, Elizabeth Cardoso, Mark Cartelli, Juan Garcia-Collazo, Tienna Grant, Hala Hussein Helmi Mashhour, Robert Mazurkivich, Edward Moreau, Mariah Mora, Victor Nieves, Melitza Nieves, Theresa Perrone, Yasmin Reyes, Virginia Ruiz, Rev. Garlen Taylor, Damien Tyler, Andreza Veilleux, and Emily Weil and I was proud to share your successful graduation ceremony with you.

I applaud the graduates for taking a step at learning more about our Police Department and our Town and would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your achievements at the Citizen Police Academy. You have worked hard throughout 8 weeks of classes that taught you the history of our police department, day-to-day responsibilities of our officers and showed you the insight intense training our officers go through to be able to ensure the safety of our residents. Hopefully, the academy has also prompted you to appreciate the work that our officers do for the East Hartford community on a daily basis. Most importantly, I hope that it helped you build long-lasting relationships with our officers.

I strongly believe that a mutual understanding between police and the community is essential, and the Citizen Police Academy is a great opportunity to increase that level of understanding. I am proud of the East Hartford Police Department for regularly putting the Citizen Academy together for the benefit of our community. Each academy session leaves participants with a new sense of understanding of what it takes to be a police officer to ensure the safety of our residents.

I wholeheartedly believe in building positive relationships with residents through a variety of community engagement and positive outreach programs. East Hartford Police Department does a wonderful job in ensuring that community policing takes precedence. With that said, I would like to take a moment and congratulate EHPD Chief Scott Sansom, Deputy Chiefs Mack Hawkins, Robert Davis and Christopher Davis, and the entire staff and officers for the extraordinary work they do for the benefit of our community.
