The Raymond Library Company is pleased to announce it will present its first comprehensive exhibition of the works of Henry Hammond Ahl (1869-1953) since 1971. The exhibition will be displayed at the East Hartford Public Library.

“We are proud and excited to have this major exhibit presented at the Raymond library,” said Mayor Marcia Leclerc.

“Henry Hammond Ahl Life and Art: Refinement and Composure” will be on view at the library during the library’s open hours: Monday – Thursday, 9 am – 8 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. The opening reception will be held from 5:00 – 9:00 PM on Friday, April 26. There is no fee to view the exhibit.

Born and raised in East Hartford, Ahl was academically trained in Munich and Paris.  By the age of 30, he was a renowned, financially successful artist - noted for his New England landscapes, portraits and large-scape religious paintings, one of which became famous and traveled the world for decades to much popular acclaim. In landscape painting, he excelled in the styles of Tonalism and American Impressionism, exemplified below.

Chosen from its large collection of works by Ahl, the exhibited works have been refurbished and newly-framed. The exhibition will be accompanied by a newly-published catalog, extensively researched and richly illustrated, on the life and work of the artist.
