The East Hartford Public Library and the East Hartford Fine Arts Commission will collaborate on a series of events in September in celebration of author Edith Wharton.

The centerpiece of the series is a bus trip sponsored by the Fine Arts Commission to the Mount, Edith Wharton’s home in the Berkshires. The bus will leave the Community Cultural Center parking lot at 9:30 AM on Sunday, September 10, and will return by 4:30 PM. The trip costs $33 and includes a house tour and lunch, with time to enjoy the gardens before returning to East Hartford. Tickets are available at the reference desk at the library, payable by cash or check (through September 1).

Prior to the bus trip, the library will host a program to celebrate Edith Wharton and her work. On Thursday, September 7 from 6:30 PM—7:30 PM, join Jason Pannone for an informal hour of discussion. No reading assignment is required, but participants are encouraged to read one of Edith Wharton’s short stories or novels prior to the program. Books will be available in advance at the circulation desk. Light refreshments will be served, and registration is encouraged. All are welcome.

Following the bus trip, participants are invited to a follow-up conversation at the library on Tuesday, September 12 from 6:15 PM—7:00 PM to discuss the trip: what you learned about Edith Wharton, her home, her gardens, and her contributions to the literary canon. Light refreshments will be served, and registration is required. The same evening at 7:00 PM, the library will be hosting a viewing of The Age of Innocence on the big screen, directed by Martin Scorsese and released in 1993. Register for a reminder.
