East Hartford, CT – The Town of East Hartford will once again sponsor Flu Clinics in the fall for residents who have not yet received a flu vaccine.

Mayor Marcia Leclerc and health officials in the Town of East Hartford urge residents who have not yet received the 2019-2020 flu vaccine, to consider obtaining it at one of the town flu clinics held in October.

The East Hartford Department of Health is sponsoring flu clinics on the following dates and times:

The Health Department-sponsored Flu Vaccine Clinics are provided by Hartford HealthCare at Home. Driver’s license, or other ID showing birthdate and address, and insurance card are required. There are no out-of-pocket expenses and reservations are not necessary. Children under the age of 9 years must have received 2-shot first full course of vaccination prior to 2019 to receive vaccination. “We know that flu can cause mild to very serious illness in otherwise healthy individuals. Yet every year, many people choose not to receive a flu vaccine”, said East Hartford Mayor Marcia Leclerc. “It is every person’s responsibility to put prevention to good use and make vaccination a part of their routine healthcare,” she added.

In addition to the flu vaccine, people should practice frequent hand washing, use waterless hand cleaners when water is unavailable, avoid those who are ill, stay at home if sick with the flu and practice cough/sneeze etiquette (i.e., cough/sneeze into bend of elbow). If you think you are sick with the flu, contact your healthcare provider. Prescription antiviral medicines are available for use in certain circumstances. “People can be vaccinated anytime, but it takes about two weeks for protection to kick in,” said East Hartford Health Director Jim Cordier. “October is an optimal time to get a shot, as the flu season usually peaks in the winter and can last through May.” For more information please call the Health Department at 860-291-7324.
