Epidemiology

To better understand and reduce the spread of disease, a staff epidemiologist —someone who studies the spread of disease — tracks and reports on local health conditions and trends. Data is kept on a range of health indicators, helping to guideplans for future programs.

Trained staff Sanitarians make certain that the Public Health Code is followed. They inspect and license places where food is sold, check septic systems, inspect houses for lead and mold, inspect public pools and enforce heating standards, and investigate disease outbreaks.

Working with area fire, police, EMS and other community partners the townis creating an emergency preparedness plan. Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions, and small poxvaccination training has already been offered to area nurses. The town has also completed several “mock”emergency drills. Residents can call or stop by Town Hall to get a copy of “East Hartford’s Community Emergency Preparedness Guide,” available in English and Spanish.

H&SS offers programs and resources to serve residentsage 60 and older including Dial-A-Ride, the North and South End Senior Centers, Emergency Cell Phone program, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group, AARP's Safe Driver Education, Light Housekeeping and Chore Assistance, Friendly Visitors/Friendly Shoppers, application assistance for state and federal programs including ConnPace prescription program and Choices, the Medicare prescription program, tax relief, and free income tax filing help. Offering caring and confidential support to all town residents, we operate programs and link with other agencies and providers in the community to help people and families who are having difficulties, including those with disabilities.
Food Assistance

Residents in need can register for Thanksgiving and Christmas and get referrals to area food banks year round. The "Toys for Children" program is offered during the Christmas holiday season. Staff also refer residents to FoodShare, the USDA surplus food distribution system which operates in several locations in East Hartford.
Homeowners Tax Relief

Eligible residents, age 65+ and totally disabled homeowners can apply for property tax credits. Applications taken February 1st to May 15th.
Renter's Rebate Program

Residents age 65+and totally disabled renters who meet income guidelines can apply for this program. Applications taken May 15th to October 1st.
