Free Radon Test Kits Available for East Hartford Residents

East Hartford, CT - The East Hartford Health Department has partnered with the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health to offer a limited supply of free radon test kits to East Hartford residents.  Radon is a colorless, tasteless, odorless gas, which may be found in soil and water. It can leak into homes from the soil, usually through cracks or other openings in the foundation.  Radon in excessive levels has been shown to be a leading cause of lung cancer, second only to cigarette smoke.

“Residents may be unaware of the harmful health risk of radon in their homes,” said Mayor Mike Walsh.  “We want to ensure East Hartford residents have information and access to resources to have their homes tested for radon.”

While supplies last, residents can visit the East Hartford Health Department to obtain a free test kit. It is best to test your home during the colder months, when most homes are closed up tight from the winter weather.

“Testing your home and taking steps to reduce elevated levels is important to protect yourself and your loved ones against cancer from radon exposure,” said Director of Health Laurence Burnsed.

Each kit will include a postage-paid envelope for shipment to the testing laboratory. Only one test kit per address is available. If you choose to participate, you will be required to utilize the kit as promptly as possible after obtaining it from the Health Department. Additionally, you will be required to provide your name, address, phone number, and email address for follow up.

While supplies last, residents can obtain a test kit at the Health Department, located in the Town Hall at 740 Main Street, East Hartford, CT 06108.  The Health Department is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Any questions about the program can be directed to members of the department at (860) 291-7324.

Testing kits can also be purchased at the American Lung Association website or by calling 1-800-LUNG-USA or 1-860-289-5401 to order a testing kit. Radon test kits are also available for purchase at local hardware and home improvement stores.  For more information about protecting against radon exposure, visit www.easthartfordct.gov/environmental-health/radon.
