East Hartford, CT— The East Hartford Public Library is exhibiting “Sunday in Savannah” in its newly re-opened browsing area. This painting, from circa 1939, was painted by noted local artist Jessie Goodwin Preston (1879-1973).

Preston was a distinguished professional painter, whose work centered largely on local landscapes, houses, farms, and portraits. She trained with prominent artists such as William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. An early member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Preston also was a founding member of what is now the Connecticut Women Artists’ Association in 1929. The painting is on loan from Jessie Slade.

“We are pleased to hang this work by Jessie Goodwin Preston,” said Library Director Sarah Kline Morgan. “Doing so connects us to the wider historical and present art scene so prominent in Connecticut.”

The painting may be viewed during the library’s open hours: Monday, 10 am-4pm; Tuesday-Thursday, 10 am-7 pm; and Friday, 10 am-4pm. There is no charge to view the painting.
