Celebrate Black History Month with East Hartford Public Library

Jocelyn Pleasant

Celebrate Black History Month by attending a program at East Hartford Public Library!

On Thursday, February 16 at 7:00 PM you are invited to celebrate the various traditions and rhythms of African Diasporic drumming in a percussion workshop led by multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist Jocelyn Pleasant. Pleasant will be joined by East Hartford-based percussionist Alvin Carter and others. This participatory performance will lead into the March 9th Intersections Concert featuring Pleasant's band, the Lost Tribe. This workshop is sponsored by the East Hartford Commission on Culture and Fine Arts, and is best suited for teens and adults. Please register.

On Thursday, February 23 at 4:00 PM, join us for a Living History program from Kevin Johnson. His portrayal of Private William Webb is told from an emotional and exciting first-person perspective that vividly illustrates the struggle of African-Americans in the Colored Infantry during the Civil war. This presentation is based on extensive research in the collections of the Connecticut State Library and the Museum of Connecticut History. For all ages. Register for a reminder.

Can't make the programs? Stop by the library anytime during open hours and browse our extensive collection of Black History titles, or pick up a crossword puzzle (beginning Feb. 1) about Black American authors from across American history to the present day. Complete a crossword to be entered into a drawing for a 3D printed item from our Makerspace. Best suited for adults, and participants are encouraged to use the library's online catalog and Google to complete the puzzle.

Programs will be held at the Raymond Library, located at 840 Main Street, East Hartford, CT. For complete lineup of programs, visit our website: www.easthartfordct.gov/library
