A Story Walk at the East Hartford Public Library

Norris School Story Walk

East Hartford, CT - East Hartford Public Library welcomed kindergartners across East Hartford to school with the StoryWalk installation of the book “The King of Kindergarten,” written by Derrick Barnes and illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton. “The King of Kindergarten” tells the story of a young boy, instilled with confidence from his parents, who has a great first day of kindergarten.

A StoryWalk was installed at each of the eight elementary schools as well as on the lawn of Raymond Library.

To make a StoryWalk, two copies of the same book are deconstructed and then placed on lawn signs so that readers can walk and read, allowing time for discussion between pages. Each school celebrated the installation of the StoryWalk in their own way. Some schools took their kindergarten classes outside to read the stories together, and others invited families to join the celebration through an afternoon of literacy, learning, and fun activities.

This project was made possible thanks to support from the Connecticut Humanities Council, which donated twenty copies of the book to create the StoryWalks.

Families are invited to visit the library to enjoy the StoryWalk on the sidewalk closest to the Central Avenue entrance to the building through the end of November (weather permitting). Inside the library there are crowns to decorate for photo props and a selfie station to take pictures.

The Raymond Library is locate at 840 Main St., East Hartford. To learn more about library programs and services, visit www.easthartfordct.gov/library.
