Learn to Tell Your Story!

at the East Hartford Public Library
library storytelling workshops

To foster a community of storytellers, the East Hartford Public Library will host a series of storytelling workshops, featuring the talents of Matthew Dicks, teacher, author, and storyteller. Matthew, the co-founder of Speak Up storytelling, a 38-time Moth StorySLAM champion, and a 6-time Moth GrandSLAM champion, will present a series of storytelling workshops at the Library for all levels of expertise.

For absolute beginners, or for those with limited availability, Matthew will present a brief introduction to storytelling on two upcoming evenings: Monday, January 14 and February 6, 6:30—8:00. At these identical short workshops, participants will learn to find the most story-worthy moments of their life. Participants will discover the simple secrets to telling a great story, and will listen to stories that will make them laugh, cry, and everything in-between. For a more in-depth introduction to storytelling, Matthew will offer a beginner storytelling workshop on Sunday, January 27 from 12:00 – 5:00. If you’d like to dip a toe into storytelling and learn some of the most effective, easiest-applied strategies to the finding and crafting of stories, but you’re not yet ready to stand before an audience and speak, the beginner storytelling workshop is a safe place for you to learn. For those ready to move beyond the beginner workshop, Matthew will offer an advanced storytelling workshop on Saturday, March 2 from 9:30—4:30. Unlike our beginner’s class, which allows participants to be passive learners if they so choose, the advanced version of the workshop is a more interactive, performance-based model.

For more information or to register for the storytelling workshops, visit our calendar of events, or e-mail Sarah Kline Morgan, Library Director. Registration for the storytelling workshops is free of charge, with priority given to East Hartford residents.
