March 11, 2022 Charter Revision Commission - Update from the Chair

March 11, 2022 CRC Update from the Chair

East Hartford, CT - The Charter Revision Commission held another productive meeting on March 10, 2022 in the Town Council Chambers.  The Commission has resolved virtually all of the substantive issues that were presented for the team to address.  We are grateful to have had a number of residents engage with the Commission to share their thoughts and feedback during the process thus far.

That said, the Commission is requesting the voice of the public to be heard as we resolve a few more issues and work to issue a working draft:

The first issue is with regard to the term of office for mayor. The Commission has discussed the merits of changing the term of office to mayor to four years versus the current two-year term. Currently, the Commission leans toward moving mayor to a four-year term after the November 2023 election.

The second issue is the consideration to remove the Personnel Appeals Board.  While the Board has been a value to the Town for its guidance on personnel matters, we have discussed the possibility to remove the board as other processes have been developed to assist with resolutions on such matters.

Our next Public Hearing/Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22nd.  This is an important meeting! As all recommendations made by this Commission must be approved by the public in order to take effect, this is an important opportunity for you, the residents our great town, to share your thoughts on these matters as we draft our findings.

As a reminder, the meeting on the 22nd is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall and held in Town Council Chambers; starting with a Public Hearing and concluding with a workshop session for the Commission to discuss outstanding issues.  These meetings are open to the public and I encourage your engagement and attendance.  For those unable to attend in person, you can also participate remotely via Microsoft Teams or watch live on Channel 5.  Full details are available on the CRC calendar through the following link:  Charter Revision Commission Calendar

For those who would prefer to express their thoughts in writing, you can reach out to Jason Marshall, our Commission Clerk at jmarshall@easthartfordct.gov and he will direct any correspondence to the group for further discussion.
