What is WRAP?

WRAP stands for the Wrap Recycling Action Program, a national initiative to increase the recycling of polyethelyne (PE) plastic bags, wraps and film. This program greatly expands the number of items of plastic that can be recycled and will save billions of pounds of plastic from ending up in the garbage accross the country.

How do I recycle under the WRAP program?

These plastics can't be placed in your single stream curbside recycling bins because the bags and films can't be processed by the machinery at recycling centers. But you can drop them off at convenient locations in East Hartford and around the country. For a list of participating locations, see the Wrap Locations Page.

Make sure your plastics are clean and dry, and look for designated recycling bins at the front of the store.

Why can't I recycle these items in my blue bin?

Most recycling facilities in Connecticut and around the country do not have the capability to process this kind of plastic material. Putting it in with your single stream recyclables in your blue blue can damage or cause problems for the machines at the recycling plant. By returning the plastics to Shop Rite of East Hartford or another participating grocery store or pickup location you can increase the amount of recycling our community diverts from the garbage and return useful and valuable material for recycling and reuse.

What kinds of plastics can be recycled?

All clean, dry PE film is recyclable, including grocery bags, bread bags, zip-top bags, newspaper delivery bags, dry cleaning bags, product overwraps, case wraps, shipping air pillows, bubble wrap, and commercial wraps.

Items that can that can be recycled include:

  • Produce Bags
  • Plastic Shipping Envelopes
  • Bread Bags
  • Drycleaning Bags
  • Case Wrap
  • Air Pillows
  • Newspaper Bags
  • Food Storage Bags
  • Product Packaging
  • Bubble Wrap

What happens to the WRAP material I recycle?

The plastic you return to your local collection point is returned to the manufacturer and recycled into new plastic products that are used again and again.
