Work Zones are a Sign to Slow Down

Work Zones are a Sign to Slow Down

Statistics from the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse show in 2020, 857 people were killed in 774 fatal work zone crashes, according to the most recent data available from workzonesafety.org. Out of the 857 fatalities, 117 were work zone workers demonstrating that the vast majority of those killed – were drivers and their passengers and pedestrians making it all the more important for drivers to slow down and stay focused while approaching and passing through a roadway work zone.

In light of these types of incidents, CIRMA Risk Management has  resources to help municipalities encourage safe driving, especially around work zones. Utilizing CIRMA’stools and getting involved during National Work Zone Awareness Week, can help generate awareness about the risks that construction workers face.

CIRMA Risk Management offers many ways to increase employee safety concerning work zones. Along with our partner, Vector Solutions, CIRMA’s e-Learning Center offers online courses that employees can take to increase their level of safety when driving including our Defensive Driving courses. We offer courses geared towards municipal employees as specific courses for Police, Fire/EMS departments. Also available, CIRMA's Defensive Driving white paper.

CIRMA's Roll Call Topics includes two articles specific to Work Zone Safety for Law Enforcement: Work Zone Safety (pg. 7) and Work Zone Safety for Law Enforcement (pg. 8).

CIRMA’s Tail Gate Topics are another great way to help raise awareness around being safe inside work zones. Tail Gate Topics include Vehicle Operations (pg. 24), Traffic Control (pg. 25) and Barricades and Warning Signs (pg. 26).
