With the Memorial Day Weekend upon us, the East Hartford Police Department intends to promote safe driving and increase the protection of all motorists.  Officers are out on the roads enforcing the State Occupant Protection laws and issuing citations to those who are unbuckled.

“If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits,” said East Hartford Police Chief Scott Sansom.  “Help us spread this life-saving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction. Seat belts save lives, and everyone—front seat and back, child and adult—needs to remember to buckle up—every trip, every time.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10,076 people who were killed in passenger vehicle crashes in 2017 weren’t buckled. Fifty-five percent of those fatalities happened at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.). Law enforcement will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement during the Click It or Ticket campaign, writing citations day and night. In Connecticut, the penalty for a seat belt violation is $92.00.

East Hartford Police want to wish travelers a safe and happy summer by reminding everyone of the importance of buckling up—every trip, every time!
