World Breastfeeding Week Highlights from August 1-7
On Tuesday, August 3rd, the LIVE LATCH LOVE! Virtual Celebration took place with the participation of some of the Breastfeeding Moms together with the WIC Staff. It was a successful event, with a great group of women connecting and supporting one another. Mothers were able to talk about their breastfeeding journey, they learned baby sign, self- care techniques, viewed a cooking demo and were taught about the use of breastfeeding pumps. Each participant received a gift for attendance.
On Wednesday, August 4, East Hartford WIC and Hartford WIC staff teamed up to host a table at the Hartford Hospital & CCMC as part of the activities for the World Breastfeeding Week celebration. Featured groups there included healthcare organizations such as Trinity Health, Yale-New Haven Healthcare, Hispanic Health Council, among other like-minded groups. Our WIC table offered informational handouts about the breastfeeding resources, and we highlighted our unique Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program. We spoke with moms, doctors, nurses, and other community members about the WIC program and the Peer Counseling Program to emphasize how we can help support these moms in their breastfeeding journeys. We saw a couple of familiar faces including current and past WIC moms, along with many new and expecting moms.
Lastly, we are delighted to announce that the East Hartford WIC Office was one of the two WIC offices recognized within the State of Connecticut with the 2021 WIC Breastfeeding Awards of Excellence. These important awards recognize local WIC agencies that have implemented exemplary breastfeeding promotion, support activities and serve as models for other local agencies to strengthen breastfeeding among WIC participants.
This was an amazing uplifting and inspiring Breastfeeding Celebration Week. We would like to emphasize and let our community know that WIC is open for business.
