The East Hartford Public Library Announces Youth Summer Career Bridging Workshops

East Hartford, CT — Are you between the ages of 16 - 24 years and looking for help finding a job? Join us for a series of virtual workshops sponsored in partnership with East Hartford CONNects, Liberty Bank, and Town of East Hartford Youth Services. Each session includes time to ask questions.

Resumes and Cover Letters 101

Monday, April 12, 10:00—11:30 AM

Learn how to turn your skills and experience into an eye-catching resume and cover letter. Have your library card ready for access to JobNow and EBSCO's Learning Express. Session facilitated by Jason Pannone, Head of Reference and Cultural Assests, at EHPL. For teens and college age youth.

Workplace Conflict & Communication 

Tuesday, April 13, 10:00—11:30 AM

People spend a lot of hours at their workplace, and we share that space with a lot of different people.  This can lead to struggles with communication and create conflicts.  In this session we will talk about some common workplace related conflict and communication issues, provide information and skills specific to reducing and eliminating these types of workplace issues, and provide space for group discussion about specific issues you’ve had or are worried about having in the workplace.  Some topics we may cover include: understanding different communication styles, how to handle mistakes, avoiding conflict when possible/appropriate, taking control of our own responses to workplace conflict, and having clear, effective communication with others. Jen King, LCSW, Program Coordinator and Kelly Waterhouse, LCSW, Counseling Coordinator at EH Youth Services will facilitate. For teens and college age youth. 

Mock Interviews

Tuesday, April 13, 1:00—3:00 PM

Want to know more about the interview process? Join us to take part in practice interviews to learn what common questions are asked and how to answer them. Attendees will be put into small groups and have a chance to answer questions and learn from their peers and interviewers in the process. For teens and college age youth.  

Credit for Life Fair

What will life look like when you're 25 years old with a career, a salary, a credit score, and a savings account? Will you be able to have a balanced budget based on the career and life choices you make? Pamela Days-Luketich, AVP, Community Outreach Officer at Liberty Bank will be here to help you get an idea of how to plan for your financial future. Volunteers from your chosen career field will join us during this session to help you discuss your choices and their effect on your quality of life. Be sure to answer this questionnaire to choose ONE career field you'd like to explore. For teens and college age youth.

Join us for a wrap-up of the Credit for Life Fair! Stay for important information on how to open a bank account, create a budget, open a bank account, and what a W-4 form is. Local banking and financial representatives will be here to share their expertise. For teens and college age youth. 
 

Building a Professional Network

Looking to become more engaged in your community or learn from others in an informal setting? Volunteering and taking part in civic activities are ways to learn informally while building your resume and connect with people that have interests in common. Learn about volunteer and civic opportunities to make a difference both locally and nationally and get an overview of LinkedIn. For teens and college age youth.

Smile! Make an appointment to have a professional photo that can be used on your LinkedIn profile. Appointments will be made in 5-minute intervals and precautions will be in place for a safe experience. For teens and college age youth.

Learn about different aspects of applying for a job. Topics include how to obtain working papers, keeping track of the hiring process, and hearing from an expert in the field of human resources. For teens and college age youth.

Get hired! Learn about the hiring process and what positions are available from local employers interested in hiring youth for jobs. For teens and college age youth.
