Active Adults Running

As I write this, I have just returned from a meeting with a group of wonderful people at the East Hartford Golf Course. They had really creative ideas for programs we can add to the East Hartford Senior Center. A large number of very engaged participants attended the Senior Center meeting the week before, as well. Thank you to all who participated in these active discussions. Look for some new, interesting programs to come.

A Genealogy Series, sponsored by Aetna Retiree Services is beginning on Friday October 13. Jennifer Zinck, a Professional Genealogist with more than a decade of research experience, is the speaker. She is a researcher, writer, and speaker who specializes in Connecticut resources and Genetic Genealogy.  Jennifer serves as the President of the Connecticut Professional Genealogists Council and as a member of the Genetic Genealogy Standards Committee.  She is a member of several professional organizations including the Association of Professional Genealogists, the National Genealogical Society, and the Connecticut Society of Genealogists. Have a cup of coffee and learn how to trace your roots with an expert Genealogist. On Friday, October 13 at 10 a.m. the topic is Getting Started in Genealogy.

The topic for Friday, October 20 at 10 a.m. is DNA & Your Family Tree. And on Friday, October 27 at 10 a.m. learn about Using Online Resources. Please register in advance by calling the Senior Center.

Flu vaccine can help you from getting the flu, make your flu less severe if you do get it, and keep you from spreading flu to your family and other people. A dose of the flu vaccine is recommended every flu season. Don’t forget to bring your Medicare card and ID with you. Insurances accepted are Aetna Medicare, Anthem Medicare, ConnectiCare Medicare, Aetna, Anthem, ConnectiCare, or Cigna. The flu vaccine is available on Friday, October 13 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. or Friday, October 20 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Senior Center.

Arthritis is very common and affects 50 million adults. If you have arthritis, join us for Managing Arthritis on Tuesday, October 10 at 1 p.m. Nancy Tomaselli, RPT will discuss the types of arthritis and what kinds of treatment is recommended in managing arthritis. Registration is requested. In the unlikely event of a cancelation, it would be beneficial to have phone numbers so that we could notify attendees.

On Tuesday, October 3 at 1 p.m., the East Hartford Senior Center will host Medicare Boot Camp. You will learn about Medicare, its benefits, and how and when to enroll. You can also find out how to get help paying for some of the costs. If you, or someone you know, would like to hear this presentation in Spanish, we will offer Understanding Medicare in Spanish on Thursday, October 5 at 1 p.m.

Touchpoints Rehab will sponsor a monthly event, You’re Invited! Complimentary Lunch and Learn. The first lunch and learn is Friday, October 6 at noon.  The topic after lunch is Music and the Mind. Did you know that music is received by every part of our brain? Please join Loreen Downham, a Memory Care Specialist from Westside Care Center, to learn how music has a positive effect on our memory, ability to learn and our state of mind. Seating is limited. Please call the office to make a reservation for this free lunch and program.
