Mayor AIA award

East Hartford, CT— Mayor Marcia A. Leclerc was awarded the Connecticut Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2019 Public Service Award of Honorable Mention.

Mayor Leclerc was honored to accept this prestigious award at the AIA Connecticut Awards Gala on Monday, December 9.

The AIA Connecticut Public Service Award recognizes those individuals or groups who have enhanced the built environment, educated the public, or supported the architectural professional.

“I am honored and humbled to be this year’s recipient of the AIA Public Service Award,” said Mayor Marcia Leclerc. “Since taking office in 2011, my goal and dedication to building a better East Hartford included business and industry development along with providing strong leadership for economic development, contributing to the quality of life measures for the people who live, work and visit East Hartford. I would like to thank Gregory Grew and the AIA for recognizing our efforts in support of local architecture that led to a number of successful projects, including the expansion and renovation of the East Hartford Public Library, renovation of the Wickham Library as well the undergoing reconstruction of the senior center slated to open in 2020.”

Nominated by Milton Gregory Grew, the AIA Connecticut Design Committee recognized Mayor Leclerc’s rare awareness of the importance of thoughtful architecture to the urban environment and the understanding of what it contributes to creating community and enhancing the quality of life.

As part of her efforts in support of architecture, Mayor Leclerc leads a program to improve town facilities starting with the successful completion of a major expansion and renovation of the Raymond Memorial Library, design of rehabilitation and accessibility improvements to the Wickham Library and current design of the adaptive reuse of the 1970s modern-style former Blessed Sacrament Church into a state-of-the-art senior center. Additionally, Mayor Leclerc continues to encourage existing commercial building owners to enhance the appearance of their buildings through a façade improvement program that helps fund these projects.
