East Hartford Town Offices Begin Move Back to Town Hall as Renovations Near Completion

*UPDATED MARCH 19, 2024*

East Hartford, CT— The town of East Hartford is ready to begin moving Town offices back to the newly renovated space at 740 Main Street. The move will occur in three (3) phases, beginning with the office of the Town Clerk on February 29, 2024.

Details for phase one (1) are as follows:

  • Town Clerk’s office will close to the public and suspend public services at 1pm on February 29, 2024 and will remain so through Friday, March 1, 2024.
  • Town Clerk’s office will reopen for in-person services beginning at 8:30am on Monday, March 4, 2024, on the first floor of Town Hall (740 Main Street).
  • Town Clerk’s office regular hours will remain Monday-Thursday 8:30am-4:30pm and Fridays 8:30am-12:30pm.
  • Parking for the Town Clerk’s office will remain on the south side, between Town Hall and Fire Station (1) One.
  • Building access will be basement level, with handicap access to the elevator and stair access to Town Clerk side door. No other areas of Town Hall will be accessible to the public at this time.
  • The State Ballot box for absentee ballots for presidential primaries will remain on the south side front lawn of Town Hall.

Timing and logistics for phases two (2) and three (3) will be announced soon.

The Town Hall renovation project began in mid-December 2022. The scope of work includes the replacement of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, modernization of the elevator, new lighting, plumbing and electrical infrastructure, and a new roof. Among other improvements with environmental benefits is a new natural gas heating system to replace the existing and inefficient oil-burning boilers. Also included are repairs to the front entrance, replacement of water-damaged ceilings and walls, abatement of hazardous materials, and renovation of the public bathrooms. During the construction closures, a majority of Town Hall departments have been housed in the Community Cultural Center at 50 Chapman Street, with the exception of the Town Clerk’s office which has been operating out of a business trailer outside the front of Town Hall.

Of the renovations and move, Town of East Hartford Mayor Connor Martin says, “We are thrilled to see this project nearing completion. These necessary updates to infrastructure may not look like visible improvements at first glance, but will create a safe and healthy environment for our staff, resulting in a higher quality of services for our residents. Prior to these renovations, we had staff with buckets on their desks to catch leaking water, a lack of accessibility for residents with mobility needs, and a building that reflected no pride in our town. I look forward to welcoming staff and residents back into this new space, with a renewed excitement and hope for the future of East Hartford, and Town Hall will serve as a symbol of this forward momentum.”
