East Hartford, CT— Reports of illegal fireworks are on the rise throughout Connecticut, and across the Nation. The Town of East Hartford has also been receiving an increased number of calls regarding aerial fireworks being set off throughout the town.

Mayor Marcia Leclerc, East Hartford Police Chief Scott Sansom and East Hartford Fire Chief John Oates would like to remind residents that aerial fireworks are prohibited by state law for use by non-professional and non-licensed users.

“The illegal use of fireworks in our neighborhoods jeopardizes the quality of life of our residents and puts the safety of our community at risk,” said Mayor Marcia Leclerc.

The increased use of illegal fireworks in East Hartford’s neighborhoods is a nuisance that negatively impacts our community and causes discomfort to all residents, including those most vulnerable such as children, elderly adults and pets. Aerial and explosive fireworks are extremely dangerous. The hot debris can land anywhere causing serious and even fatal injuries, fires and significant property damage.

“Fireworks, other than sparklers are illegal and dangerous,” said Fire Chief John Oates. “They are even be more dangerous in the hands of children and young adults. They can cause serious personal injury, including burns and loss of hands, as well as cause fires and property damage. Be safe and leave fireworks to the professionals.”

Residents are asked to call the East Hartford Police Department at 860-528-4401 if they observe aerial or explosive fireworks being used.

“Please report them at the time they are occurring with as many details as possible, including specific areas where these fireworks are being launched to allow our officers to investigate and take appropriate actions,” said Police Chief Scott Sansom.
