East Hartford Main Street Reconfiguration

East Hartford Main Street Reconfiguration

East Hartford, CT - For their 2023 Vendor-In-Place project, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) milled and paved Main Street (Route 5) from Pitkin Street to Sterling Road. As part of that project, and in conjunction with significant Town input, lane markings have been revised and improved. Motorists are advised to slow down and pay attention to the new pavement markings.

There are still two travel lanes in each direction, but an additional striped area in the middle of the road has been reserved for turning movements (shown in yellow on the project plans).  Providing this safe space for left turning vehicles will allow through traffic to continue without backups that have historically occurred in this section of Main Street.  For traffic turning right onto Connecticut Boulevard (Route 44) or Burnside Avenue (Route 44), separate lanes are also provided.

From Wells Avenue/Chapman Street to Orchard Street, a dual left-turn area is provided between the through lanes.  Do not enter the dual left-turn area until you are ready to turn and do not proceed straight down this area.

Note that traffic signals have not been modified as part of this project – motorists still need to wait for an opening in oncoming traffic to make left turns.  The Town is hopeful that a future DOT project will revise the signals to provide left-turn arrows.

At several intersections, dashed extension lines are provided to keep traffic in line for through and/or turning movements.  Motorists are asked to slow down and follow these markings to reach the intended lane.

Where on-street parking is not allowed, white hatched markings are provided.  Please only park between these hatched areas.  Motorists are reminded that they should park within 12” of the curb face.  From Wells Avenue/Chapman Street to Burnside Avenue, there is additional white hatched marking between the travel lane and the on-street parking area.
