SNAP Benefits Accepted at the East Hartford Farmers’ Market

East Hartford, CT - The Town of East Hartford is excited to announce Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are accepted at our farmers’ market!  SNAP is a government program that provides a sliding scale of income for food to low-wage working families, low-income seniors, people with disabilities, and other individuals with low-incomes. By becoming a SNAP market retailer, we’re helping families access fresh produce and other eligible foods, as well as support economic opportunities for our farmers.

An estimated 1 in 10 Connecticut residents struggle with hunger; more than 83,000 children are food insecure.  Farmers’ markets are great sources of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods.  “Approximately 22 percent of East Hartford households are SNAP recipients,” said Mayor Mike Walsh.  “Accepting SNAP benefits at our farmers’ market will help improve access to fresh produce for individuals and families.”

The East Hartford Farmers’ Market (EHFM) will have a booth where individuals with SNAP benefits will be able to purchase tokens that can be redeemed for produce and other eligible foods sold at our farmers’ market.  Under federal law, individuals are allowed to use SNAP benefits to buy almost any type of food intended for human consumption. Eligible foods include:

  • Fruits and vegetables;
  • Breads and cereals;
  • Meats, fish, and poultry;
  • Dairy products; and
  • Seeds and plants that produce food.

In addition to SNAP benefits, residents will be able to use Women, Infants, and Children farmers’ market benefits as well as senior farmers’ market nutrition program benefits.  The EHFM will be open every Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. from July 11th through October 24th.  For more information about your local farmers’ market, please visit the EHFM website.
