WHAT: Student Essay Contest Award Presentation

WHERE: Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy, 857 Forbes St, East Hartford

WHEN: Monday, May 15, 2017, 7PM

WHO: East Hartford Patriotic Commission, East Hartford Public Schools, Students, their families.

Each year the East Hartford Patriotic Commission sponsors an essay contest asking students to respond to the question: “What does the flag mean to me?” The essays are judged by the East Hartford Board of Education and the winners will be presented as a ceremony at the Connecticut International Baccalaureate Academy on Monday, May 15. All are welcome.
 

WHAT: Placement of American Flags on Veterans Cemetery Graves

WHERE: Hillside Cemetery, 60 Hillside St.

WHEN: Saturday, May 20, 2017, 8AM

WHO: East Hartford Patriotic Commission, Volunteers

The East Hartford Patriotic Commission will be placing American Flags on the graves of about 3,500 veterans on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 8 AM at Hillside Cemetery. Volunteers are asked to bring a long screwdriver, stake, or other implement to make holes in the ground for the flags. This event will be held rain or shine.
 

WHAT: Memorial Day Remembrance and Celebration

WHERE: East Hartford High School. 869 Forbes St.

WHEN: Friday, May 26, 2017, 6PM

WHO: Public Officials, Veterans’ Groups, Performers, Speakers, the Public

Join the East Hartford Patriotic Commission for a tribute to veterans and active duty military personnel. The East Hartford High School Band and the Sound of New England Chorus will perform patriotic songs and speakers and representatives from local Veterans Organizations will honor and remember those who have served and given their lives. Light refreshments will be provided. All are welcome.
 

WHAT: Sunday Memorial Service and Wreath Laying

WHERE: Bicentennial Square, Scotland Rd. and Hudson St.

WHEN: Sunday, May 28, 2017, 6PM

WHO: East Hartford Patriotic Commission, Public Officials, Veterans’ Groups, the Public

This service will feature the laying of a memorial wreath and reading of the names of East Hartford residents killed in action. There will be a presentation of the colors and a short speaking program. Organized and sponsored by the East Hartford Patriotic Commission.
