Breast Cancer Awareness Month

breast cancer awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, raising awareness of breast cancer and encouraging its early detection. Throughout my tenure in public service, I have continuously urged members of our community to take care of themselves and take the necessary precautionary methods to help reduce the risks. This holds true for breast cancer as well.

According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women worldwide and is the second most common overall. To date, there are 3,8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, thanks to adequate research and advocacy, which have helped us advanced in the fight against this disease and achieve significant decreases in mortality.

I urge you to remember that the cornerstone of breast cancer control is its early detection, resulting in high chances of successful treatment and survival. This year has served as a powerful reminder for all of us that our combined choices and actions have the ability to protect the most vulnerable among us in many ways. This is why it’s so important for us to continue to raise awareness of breast cancer, because by working together we can show every woman that her life is important and become a powerful force in helping advance research and expand resources.

It is vital that women over the age of 40 get regular mammograms along with conducting self-examinations. I would like to take a moment and remind residents that increased screening for breast cancer will help reduce late diagnosis while also leading to better outcomes for those diagnosed within our community. Additionally, studies have shown that physical activity and proper diet can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. This October, I urge you to prioritize your health and wellbeing by undergoing screenings and maintaining an active lifestyle.

Please remember that many local healthcare providers offer screening services with low and no cost options available. For further details about breast cancer, information on early detection, risk factors and treatment options visit www.nationalbreastcancer.org.
