Mayor’s Cleanup: Thank You to All of Our Volunteers!

Mayor's Clean Up Day Group Photo

This year’s Mayor’s Cleanup Day was a great success. We had over 300 volunteers join us last Saturday. In addition to general clean up and litter pickup, our volunteers washed and scrubbed wrought iron garbage can holders and painted the fire hydrants along Main Street. They mulched and planted mums at Center Cemetery and the Community Cultural Center, and they weeded and removed overgrowth at the state owned property at the corner of Tolland and Burnside Avenue. Both in terms of turnout, and amount of work done, this year was our biggest Mayor’s Cleanup Day yet.

I want to thank our event sponsors, Pratt & Whitney and Coca-Cola for making this event possible, and most of all I want to thank the many organizations, businesses and community groups that rallied their membership and employees to come out and volunteer their time. The following organizations took on major cleanup projects this year:

Agape Fellowship
Calvary Congregational Methodist Church
Council of Ghanaian Associations
East Hartford High School/ASPIRE Team
Girl Scouts of Connecticut
Glastonbury High School Key Club
Goodwin College/WISE
InterCommunity
Kwahuman Association of Connecticut
The Pentecostals of Greater Hartford
People’s United Bank
St. Mary’s Ghanaian Catholic Ministry
Stop and Shop
United Bank
YMCA
Young-Educated-Determined-to-Succeed, Inc. (Y.E.D.S.)

The following organizations sent volunteers to help us with general cleanup:

Discount Trophy
DXC Technologies
Holiday Inn Hartford Downtown Area
Pratt & Whitney
Riverfront Recapture, Inc.
Rotary Club
ShopRite

I want to extend a special thank you to all the individual people who stepped up to volunteer, who put in the effort to clean up our Main Street and the gateways to our community. And finally, thank you to our great Town staff, from my office, from the Department of Public Works, and from Parks and Recreation, who helped organize the event. Thank you to all who participated and for your commitment to our community!
