East Hartford, CT—Tax season is upon us and there are a number of free tax preparation services available in Town for those looking for help.

The East Hartford Public Library has collaborated with United Way to offer free tax preparation services to families with household income of up to $55,000. The services are made available through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. IRS-certified VITA volunteers from the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut will be at the East Hartford Public Library on Thursday, March 12 and Wednesday, April 8; 9:00-11:00 AM to help you prepare and file your taxes, teach you new ways to save, and provide tips to help stretch your refund. Registration is required by calling 211. The checklist of required documents will be provided to taxpayers when they register to attend. Free Federal and Tax information booklets are also available at the library.

Additionally, the East Hartford Senior Center is excited to announce that the AARP Tax Aide Program will be available to residents beginning on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 and through Tuesday, April 14, 2020. The AARP Foundation sponsors the program, assisting individuals with a free preparation of federal and state tax returns.

Residents will be able to get free assistance with preparation of their federal and state tax returns on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Senior Center, at 70 Canterbury Street, from 8:30 to 11 AM by appointment only. To schedule an appointment please call the senior center at 860-568-4281.

To get assistance through the program, taxpayers are required to bring a photo ID and their Social Security Numbers, along with last year’s tax return, all statements of Income (i.e. Social Security, W2, 1099’s, Sale Stocks/Bonds, Interest/Dividend Statements) and evidence of deductions (Contributions, mortgage & home equity interest payments, medical, dental, prescription drug expenses) if you normally itemize deductions.
