East Hartford Celebrates "Take Your Child to the Library" Day

Take you child to the library day

The East Hartford Public Library will celebrate “Take Your Child to the Library Day” on Saturday, February 9 with a fun lineup of programs for the whole family. Stop by to attend a program, choose a book to borrow, and learn more about what the library has to offer for children and families.

“In recognition of ‘Take Your Child to the Library Day,’ I encourage you to visit our library and learn more about the wide variety of programs and services it has to offer,” said Mayor Marcia A. Leclerc.

Families with young children are invited to join us for an airplane storytime from 10:00-10:45 am. Take flight with stories, music, and a craft about planes. Best suited for children ages 2 and up accompanied by a caregiver. No registration required.

“We invite families to learn more about our programs and services by visiting us on ‘Take Your Child to the Library Day,’” said Library Director Sarah Kline Morgan. “In addition to our great programs, we have a rich collection of books, movies, and other circulating materials, all accessible with your library card. Visit us and learn more!”

At 11:00 am, children are invited to read to the dogs! Sign up for a 15 minute reading session with a certified therapy dog. Our furry friends and their humans are members of Healers with Halos Therapy Dogs, sponsored by Bolton Veterinary Hospital. Bring your own book or select one from the library. All ages welcome. Registration is required.

In the afternoon, meet Bessie Coleman! Performer Tammy Denease will take you on a journey into the world of the First Negro Aviatrix in a 3 PM performance for all ages sponsored by the East Hartford Commission on Culture and Fine Arts. You will take an international voyage that begins in the segregated south of the United States, where cotton was king and Jim Crow ruled underneath white sheets, where the color of your skin could determine whether you lived or died. Your journey ends in Paris, France, where self-determination—not skin color or gender—is what truly matters. Register for a reminder, or just drop in. Before or after the presentation, be sure to stop in the children’s room to select a book from the Black History month book display. Not sure which book to choose? Ask a librarian for a recommendation.

We’ll also have a drop-in craft, all day while supplies last. Decorate a balsa wood airplane! For kids ages 5 and up, no registration required.
