Weather Alert – Heavy Rainfall Update

East Hartford, CT—On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, heavy rainfall continues across the state. The National Weather Service predicts consistent heavy rains throughout the day. East Hartford Public Works employees continue to monitor town roads and properties in flood-prone areas to address any drainage issues that may arise.

We anticipate this heavy and consistent rainfall to overwhelm the already saturated grounds and our storm-water drainage system. As rivers, streams and tributaries rise, they will present moderate urban flooding. As waters recede overtime, the roads will begin to drain, but flooding concern can linger for an extended period even after the rain is over. This is due to the large amount of precipitation received in a short period of time. The East Hartford Public Works employees have placed precautionary signage in flooded areas and will continue to add more signs as new areas are identified. As waters recede overtime into our streams and rivers, the roads will begin to drain.

We are asking the public to remain at home and avoid driving over any standing water, as its depth can be deceiving. When it doubt, “TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.”

Areas of poor drainage and those prone to ponding might be subject to flooding more than others. Please use caution in those areas. Below is a list of known streets in Town that historically flood in these conditions:
