The East Hartford Commission on Culture & Fine Arts Schedules 15th Foreign Film Series

East Hartford, CT - The East Hartford Commission on Culture & Fine Arts presents their 15th series of Foreign Films on the third Saturdays of the month starting January 2023 through April 2023.

The events will take place on January 21st, February 18th, March 18th and April 15t, at 7 PM at the Community Cultural Center at 50 Chapman Place.

Admission is free. The East Hartford Summer Youth Festival will be selling concessions, including popcorn.

The first, on Saturday, January 21, will be the Finnish film “Compartment No. 6”. Set in the 1990s, a young Finnish woman boards a train in Moscow to make a several-day-long journey to see ancient petroglyphs in the arctic port of Murmansk. Forced to share a tiny, depressing sleeping car with a larger-than-life Russian miner, the unexpected encounter leads the strangers to change their perspectives and experience unexpected human connection.

This film is rated R and runs 1 hour, 47 minutes. It won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021. Glenn Kenny of rogerebert.com awarded it 3 1/2 stars out of 4, saying, “The movie’s perspective on two lost souls finding each other is considerate and compassionate” and “with the committed acting, it makes for a worthwhile journey”.

The three other films in the series are: “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom” (Bhutan; February), “Made in Bangladesh” (March) and “The Last Tree” (UK & Nigeria; April).
