Snow Removal Tips for Residents

Snow Removal Tips for Residents

With our first major snow storm behind us, we’d like to take a moment to share our Snow Removal Tips for Residents. Many of our neighborhood schools have children that walk to and from school daily, in addition to students who walk to bus stops, and residents who access public transportation. It is imperative that we keep the sidewalks clear so that our residents and students are not forced to walk in the street.

Pursuant to Section 18-38 of the Town Ordinances, all residents who own property in East Hartford that is adjacent to a sidewalk are responsible for clearing those sidewalks of snow, ice, sleet or debris within 8 daylight hours after snowfall or inclement weather. This includes, but is not limited to shoveling snow, laying salt or sand to ease the traction, and clearing all areas of sidewalk abutting personal property, and extending to crosswalks and driveway curb cuts.

Those residents found to be in violation of the ordinance may be ticketed. To report an incident, please contact the Inspections & Permits Office at (860) 291-7340.

As well, our Fire Chief would like to take this opportunity to remind residents about clearing fire hydrants of snow. Pursuant to Section 18-23 of the Town Ordinances, the owner of any property which abuts any fire hydrant shall, within 8 daylight hours after cessation of any fall of snow, remove any snow or sleet which may have accumulated on top of and within a radius of 3 feet from any part of the hydrant. The Fire Department is clearing hydrants, but is asking for your help before colder temperatures freeze the snow, complicating removal and hydrant usage in case of emergency.

For questions, contact the Fire Department at (860) 291-7415.

Thank you, and stay safe and warm East Hartford!
