Japan Week at the East Hartford Public Library

Origami display at East Hartford Library

(June 5, 2018) East Hartford-The culture of Japan will be the center stage for a week-long series of programs from June 25 – 29 at the East Hartford Public Library. Japan Week is organized by East Hartford resident Toshiko Uchino along with members of the US and Japan Society of Connecticut and Heart International Japan.
The week will begin with “Origami for Beginners,” on Monday, June 25 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The program will be repeated on Wednesday, June 27 at 10 a.m. There, interested individuals will learn the basics of origami—a Japanese paper-folding art. Please choose one session, as the content will be identical. These programs are best suited for teens and adults, and registration is required.

  • On Tuesday, June 26, adults are invited to learn about “Wrapping the Japanese Way”. Japanese fabric-wrapping is a beautiful and eco-friendly way to wrap gifts. This craft program will teach you the basics. Please register.
  • On Wednesday, June 27, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., children are invited to create their own manga-inspired animation in a workshop offered by Marc Pettersen. There will be a group project, or participants can create their own individual projects. All that’s needed is imagination! Best suited for children ages 8 through 12. Please register.
  • Then, Mrs. Yaeko Takagi, a kimono master from Japan, will present a kimono class on Thursday, June 28 at 10 a.m. This interactive and informative program is best suited for an adult audience. Please register. On Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Toshiko Uchino will present a program featuring haiku written by the survivors of the Great Eastern Japan earthquake. This program is best suited for an adult audience. Register for a reminder.

Finally, to end the week, families are invited to join us on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. for a showing of My Neighbor Totoro (rated G, 100 min.). Bring a quiet snack and enjoy the film on our big screen! For all ages, no registration required. In conjunction with Japan Week, we have origami on display at the library, including origami cranes, a zoo, and a flower garden. Stop by to view these displays anytime throughout June and browse our book display on the main level for more information on Japanese culture.
