Improvements to the Traffic Signal at Main Street, Maple Street/Broad Street and Modification to the Brewer Street Road Closure Detour

Improvements to the Traffic Signal at Main Street, Maple Street/Broad Street and Modification to the Brewer Street Road Closure

East Hartford, CT— As part of the Route 2 improvements project, the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) upgraded the town-owned traffic signal at Main Street/Maple Street/Broad Street.  One of the major changes was the addition of a second lane on the southbound Main Street leg of the intersections - creating a dedicated left turn lane.

While the new lane alleviates issues with straight and right-turning traffic, the signal faces and phasing were not changed to create a protected left turn movement from Main Street to Maple Street. Residents and the traveling public have noted that the wait time for an opening in northbound traffic causes motorists to miss the green cycle, sometimes several green cycles.

To remedy this condition, the DOT has designed further improvements which will add left turn arrows and a protected left turn phases at the signal (for the north and southbound Main Street legs). Equipment to make this change has been ordered and will be installed by the DOT contractor as soon as it is received. Motorists are advised to avoid the left turn from Main Street to Maple Street until that work is complete.

For the road closure on Brewer Street, which went into effect May 1, 2023, the original detour plan was to direct traffic from High Street, across Carter Street and onto Main Street southbound. This route sends detoured traffic to the traffic signal at Main Street/Maple Street/Broad Street where vehicles would need to turn left onto Maple Street.  To avoid additional delays at the traffic signal, we have changed the detour to follow High Street - detoured traffic will then go straight through the traffic signal from Broad Street to Maple Street. Motorists should follow the posted detour signs.
