East Hartford Town Council Extends the Tax Deferment Program

East Hartford, CT—The East Hartford Town Council unanimously adopted a resolution that extends the tax deferment program adopted by the council at the April 21, 2020 meeting, to April 1, 2021.

Governor Ned Lamont through Executive Order 9R, issued on December 16, 2020, allows municipalities to extend temporary tax relief options for their community in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  

“As many taxpayers continue to experience financial hardship because of COVID-19, it was instrumental for us to help alleviate some of their concerns by extending the tax deferment program,” said Mayor Marcia Leclerc.

The Deferment Program is designed to extend the grace period for payment of all Personal Property, Motor Vehicle, and all other Real Estate taxes (including, non-escrowed real estate taxes, and real estate taxes due from landlords [or any taxpayer that rents or leases property to tenants or lessees] whose Deferment application has been approved], being due on January 1, 2021; taxes must be paid or US Post Marked on or before April 1, 2021 to be considered on time. 

All escrowed real estate taxes, and all real estate taxes due from landlords (or any taxpayer that rents or leases property to tenants or lessees) are due January 1, 2021 and must be paid or US Post Marked on or before February 1, 2021 to be considered on time.

Deadline to apply for Deferment is February 1, 2021.

Accordingly and thereafter all deadlines to make timely payments are subject to an interest charge of 1.5% per month from the DUE DATE of January 1, 2021.  Minimum interest is $2.00 (Section 12-146 Connecticut General Statutes)
