East Hartford Announces New Parking Ban Alert System

East Hartford New Parking Ban Alert System is in Effect

East Hartford, CT— The Town of East Hartford announced the establishment of a new parking ban alert system to enhance the level of communication during snow storms. The announcement was made at a press conference this morning, held outside the East Hartford Middle School at 777 Burnside Avenue.

The new parking ban alert system will provide residents with a visual alert informing them when an on-street parking ban is in effect.

An on-street parking bans are activated when over four inches of snow is predicted, and they are required to assist Public Works crews to plow efficiently and safely.

“This new alert system will give East Hartford residents additional warning of parking bans during future winter events,” said Mayor Mike Walsh. “Parking bans improve the Town’s ability to clear snow from roadways to enhance public safety during snow and ice storms.”

The Department of Public Works in coordination with the Police Department will be responsible for the activation of 15 blue lights, installed on street light poles at key road intersections throughout the Town. When the blue light is on, it indicates a parking ban is in effect.

“Typically, Public Works activates a parking ban when 4 or more inches of snow is forecast,” said Public Works Director Marilynn Cruz-Aponte. For example, Mayberry  “The deactivation will also be the responsibility of Public Works.”

The blue notification lights are an additional resource to notify motorists of a parking ban in town. The town will continue to communicate these alerts through the town website at www.easthartfordct.gov, the town’s official Facebook page, as well as through the digital board at Alumni Park and EH Alert system.

Parking Options in Town Parks

Residents who have little to no access to off-street or backyard parking may park in neighborhood recreational park locations when parking bans are in effect. Public Works will delineate parking areas in neighborhood parks, place clear signage and maintain the parking areas during snow parking bans to facilitate off-street parking. Residents will be given a contact phone number for any questions. Residents who avail themselves of this option will do so at their own risk.

Individuals can park at the following parks during an on-street snow ban:

  • Alumni Park (1021 Main St)
  • McAuliffe Park (30 Remington Road)
  • Martin Park (307  Burnside Ave)
  • Woodland Park (Long Hill Dr)
  • Labor Field Park (Woodlawn Circle)
  • Shea Park (66 Mercer Ave)
  • Former McCartin School Parking Lot (70 Canterbury St)
  • Hockanum Park (356 High St)

Once a snow storm is over, residents will be required to remove their vehicles from the parks.

“Alternate parking locations in Town parks will help residents avoid tickets and towing,” said Police Chief Scott Sansom. “The Police department will continue to educate those residents who are non-compliant,” he added.
