Area farmers will begin offering Connecticut-grown fresh fruits and vegetables this summer on Friday, July 7 as the East Hartford Farmer’s Market begins its 25th year of operation. The market will be open Fridays through October 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Raymond Library at 840 Main St.

The Farmer’s Market is a great way to get locally grown fresh produce and support Connecticut farms and agriculture. Many supermarkets and other food retailers get their produce from regional distributors and/much, if not most of this produce is grown out of state and shipped to Connecticut by truck or rail. Under Connecticut farm fresh regulations, the East Hartford Farmer’s Market is only allowed to sell Connecticut-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. This produce is often sold the same day it is harvested.

The mission of the East Hartford Farmers Market is to provide local healthy food to the East Hartford community, to encourage the public to adopt healthier food purchasing, preparation and consumption habits and to educate people about the importance of good nutrition and wellness to a healthy lifestyle. The Farmer’s Market also seeks to create a social community space that fosters public interaction around fresh, local food and community health resources.

Good health through good nutrition’ is the theme of this year’s market. Farmer’s markets also draw consumers to downtown areas, support the state’s agricultural industry and help preserve open space and the character of Connecticut’s rural communities.

All Connecticut farmers’ markets are affiliated with the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Farmer’s Market Coupon Program.  They are authorized to accept their produce and vegetable vouchers.

The Farmer’s Market is Co-sponsored by East Hartford Health Department and the East Hartford Public Libraries. These organizations and other agencies will conduct health, education and outreach activities at the market, and representatives from the Health Department’s Community Nursing Services Division, the VFW, East Hartford Childplan and First Choice Community Health Center will be there.  Special events will be announced as the season progresses.
