East Hartford, CT— The East Hartford Public Library is proud to announce it has received a donation of eight works by noted painter Henry Hammond Ahl (1869-1953), a native of East Hartford. Ahl was famous in his lifetime for portraits and landscapes. The addition of the eight landscapes add to the library’s already extensive collection of Ahl’s work. The paintings are a gift of Marvin H. Leibowitz, through his son, Lawrence.

“We are honored to receive this generous donation of the incredible work of Henry Hammond Ahl to add to our exiting collection,” said Mayor Marcia Leclerc.

The paintings are from the latter part of Ahl’s career, dating from the 1920s through the 1940s. They include landscapes, seascapes, and a winter scene similar to other works already in the library’s collection.

“We are grateful to Mr. Leibowitz for his donation of the Ahl paintings,” said Library Director Sarah Kline Morgan. “These additions to the library’s Ahl collection further cement his presence in the local art community and beyond.”

The paintings are on view in the recessed gallery on the ground floor of the library’s atrium through the end of September 2021. The works may be viewed during the library’s open hours: Monday and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and Tuesday-Thursday, 9 am-8 pm. There is no charge.
