It has come to the Town’s attention that a few residents have been approached by individuals indicating that they represent Frontier or Verizon and that they are signing up residents to the “Town’s Fiber Internet service”. Please be advised that Frontier and Verizon fiber projects are not at all a part of the fiber optic network being installed by SiFi Networks (SiFi) in collaboration with the Town of East Hartford.

One major advantage of the SiFi/Town system is that it will be installed underground – not hung on utility poles. SiFi is currently laying the conduit for the system, which looks like this (the orange wire is a tracer):

SIFI

Once the conduit is laid and connected to handholes/equipment, SiFi will “blow in” the fiber optic lines that convey the data. The fiber lines are routed to data centers that allow internet service providers to make connections with the internet.  When service is requested, and not before, the fiber optic lines are extended to homes and businesses.

SiFi is permitted to use the Town’s right-of-way (ROW) to extend the system throughout the entire Town. The Town’s ROW is typically (but not always) located on the house side of the sidewalk. The actual location will vary depending on the address.  For example, in most traditional subdivisions, the ROW line is 10 feet outside of the curb on the road – meaning that a 10 foot wide strip of grass (or grass & sidewalk) are located in the Town’s ROW.  SiFi is permitted to install system conduit anywhere in the Town ROW, including under the road pavement and in the grass areas outside of the pavement.
