Using the Web Safely

The Internet has opened up a world of information for anyone with a computer and a connection! Your children will learn about computers. But just as you wouldn’t send children near a busy road without some safety rules, you shouldn’t send then on to the information superhighway without rules of the road. Too many dangers from pedophiles to con artists can reach children (and adults) through the Internet.

For Parents to Know
Know what your children are doing on the computer at all times.

Talk with your children about setting rules for your Internet use. Decide together when they can go online, for how long, and what areas they can visit. Then make sure they keep to the rules.

If someone solicits a private or personal meeting with your child or threatens them in any way, contact your local Law Enforcement Agency.

For Kids and Teens
Don’t talk to strangers. Do not chat with people you do not know.

If it makes you feel weird, something’s wrong. Stop, tell a parent or adult what happened.

Never! Never! Never! agree to meet someone in person. No matter what promise or offer was made. Stop, tell a parent or adult if someone asks you to do this.

No Secrets! Let a parent share with you, have nothing to hide.
Never give out any personal information, like a phone number, address, school attending, age, etc.

Never use web cameras or microphones on the Internet. Just showing your picture, or hearing your voice gives away personal information about you and there are people on the internet who can find out where and who you are with very little information.

Be careful of your spelling. A couple mistyped letters can make a big change in where you end up on the Internet. Stay away from violent, pornographic, or hate group websites.
