With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, Connecticut’s law enforcement agencies intend to promote safe driving and increase the protection of all motorists.  The East Hartford Police Department is out on the roads enforcing the State Occupant Protection laws and issuing citations to those who are unbuckled.

“Seat belt use increased to nearly 90 percent statewide in 2016. Our goal is to beat that rate in 2017,” said East Hartford Police Chief Scott Sansom. “Wearing a seat belt is the single most effective way to save your life and the lives of your loved ones while on the road. In real life you don’t get a second chance. Please buckle up,” Sansom added.

Proper seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injury. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2015 alone, seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 13,941 lives – and could have saved an additional 2,814 people if they had been wearing their seat belts.

One of the safest choices drivers or passengers can make is to buckle up. This Memorial Day Weekend—and every day of the year—remember: Buckle up…It’s the law. It’s enforced. Click it or Ticket!
