A Warning to Residents about a Possible "Carbon Monoxide" scam

Mayor Marcia A. Leclerc, in conjucntion with the East Hartford Police Department and East Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office are warning residents about a possible “Carbon Monoxide” scam involving people claiming to be home inspectors from private companies. These people have called residents claiming there is a
state mandate/law/code to have their “carbon monoxide checked” in their homes i.e.,
chimneys, furnaces, basements, etc.

The East Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office does not use private companies to conduct
inspections. Furthermore, no such mandates exist for inspections in single family homes.
Other communities have experienced similar scams where home owners are given the
impression that they must schedule a mandatory inspection to prove compliance to these
regulations or risk charges under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act.

Police are concerned that once the inspection takes place, the homeowner will be told they
are not in compliance and are required to purchase carbon monoxide alarms, which the
‘inspector’ will have on hand. Please report this scam to the East Hartford Police Department at 860-528-4401.
