Winter Storm Alert - Tuesday, March 14, 2017

A major snow storm is forecasted to hit our area during the early morning hours on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, and continue throughout the day. This nor’easter could bring significant snowfall (perhaps as much as two feet in some parts of the state), and high winds. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Hartford County Connecticut.

----

PARKING BAN:

Due to snow / ice / emergency conditions, an on-street parking ban is in effect for the Town of East Hartford, Connecticut. This parking ban will commence on:

Monday, March 13, at 10PM and will remain in effect until further notice.

If there are any questions, please call the East Hartford Police Department at (860) 528-4401.

----

SOLID WASTE COLLECTION:

Residents are hereby notified that regularly scheduled curbside waste collection for Tuesday, March 14, will begin at 5AM. Residents should bring their barrels to the curb by 12AM (midnight) Tuesday to ensure Tuesday morning collection prior to the onset of the storm.  There will be no change to curbside waste collection for Wednesday, March 15, 2017.

SNOW CLEARANCE PROCEDURES:

During the storm, the plows will work efficiently to clear all roads, beginning with major arteries and connecting roads before clearing less traveled neighborhood roads. Please note: it can take up to eight (8) hours after the snow stops to clear all roads in East Hartford. During the storm, emergency services will have access to all areas of town and will be in communication with town plows in case of emergency. Please abide by the parking ban and give way to all plows and emergency vehicles. We appr Thank you for your cooperation.

WINTER STORM PREPARATION:

Residents are urged to make adequate preparations for the snow, cold temperatures and dangerous roads:

Stay Home, and Only Travel if Necessary: If you need food, medication, or supplies, please gather them this evening (Monday), and be prepared to remain home for the duration of the storm.

Give Way to Emergency Vehicles: Please use caution and make way for emergency vehicles and snow plows. Please report vehicles parked in violation of the Parking Ban to the EHPD at 860-528-4401.

Clear Your Sidewalks, Driveways, & Crosswalks: Be aware of the ordinances for shoveling sidewalks, which are covered in Section 18-38, stating that all property owners are responsible for maintaining and clearing snow and ice from the sidewalk that abuts their property and have 8 hours after a storm to clear their sidewalks. If a storm ends overnight, the property owner then has the next 8 hours of daylight to clear their sidewalk, before they are issued a warning and then subsequently fined.

Residents should expect that plows will move snow from the street onto sidewalks, driveways and open areas. This is not done purposefully, and is unfortunately unavoidable. Plows cast snow up to eight feet in order to ensure that snow is moved off the street and over existing snow banks. Please keep in mind that plows may need to make multiple passes to fully clear streets of snow. Please plan your snow clearing accordingly.

Other important winter tips to consider include: Using common sense while shoveling, in terms of physical exertion, and being safety-conscious while operating a snow blower; Being mindful of parking bans in effect, which helps with the town’s snow removal operations and the passage of emergency vehicles; Dressing in layers and using many thin, warm layers rather than a few thick layers, allowing your body to insulate better. Additionally, if using a generator, be mindful to place it at least 20 feet away from your home, windows, doors and vents to avoid deadly Carbon Monoxide fumes.
