East Hartford Public Works Spring Cleanup Tips & Reminders

To support resident efforts, Public Works offers many opportunities for residents to dispose of and recycle household waste in an environmentally safe manner. See the many programs below.

Public Works: Supporting Residents in Keeping East Hartford Clean & Beautiful

Blue Barrel Recycling:       
Did you know that the Town pays $0 per ton for recycling while regular trash costs $71 per ton to be burned? Free barrels are available for 1-6 family homes. If you are an extraordinary recycler, request a second free recycling barrel by calling 860-291-7363.

Brush Recycling:
Did you know that you can deliver brush to the transfer station? Public Works saves taxpayer dollars by recycling all brush delivered by residents. Bulky Waste Permit required.

Bulky Waste Disposal:       
On Saturdays May 6, 13, 20 and 27, the Public Works Office, 61 Ecology Drive, will be open for Spring Bulky Waste Permit Registration from 8 am to 1:45 pm. Information can be found on www.easthartfordct.gov under Public Works.

Car Batteries: 
Accepted at the Transfer Station, 61 Ecology Drive, Bulky Waste Permit required.

Composting: 
Composting of leaves, vegetable and fruit waste can be done in your backyards. Visit the East Hartford Library for educational resources to make backyard composting easy or on-line at www.easthartfordct.gov/library to get started.

Clothing and Textiles:       
Did you know you can deliver used clothing, footwear, household linens and bedding items, stuffed animals and accessories like hats, gloves, ties, pocketbooks to the Transfer Station for FREE? When you recycle textiles the Town earns revenue and avoids paying $71 per ton on disposal.

Donations:
Let’s remember that donating gently used household items to Goodwill, Savers, Salvation Army and other organizations can be used as a tax right-off and contributes to training and employment programs.

Electronics Recycling:     
Deliver electronics-televisions, computers, monitors, VCR/DVD players, cameras, keyboards, to the Transfer Station for free!

Saturday, May 13 from 9am-Noon participate in a FREE E-waste and Paper Shredding event hosted by American Eagle Credit Financial Credit Union, 417 Main Street, East Hartford.

Grass & Leaf Recycling:
Residents can deliver grass clippings and leaves in brown paper bags or loose only (no plastic bags) to the transfer station for FREE!

Household Hazardous Waste Collection:
East Hartford residents can participate any of the 10 drop-off locations offered by the MDC, May through October, 8 am – 1 pm for FREE. See the list below for May and June. Check on-line at MDC's hazardous waste collection webpage for the entire 2017 schedule and for the checklist of all the acceptable hazardous waste you can deliver.

Mattress Recycling: Deliver for FREE disposal at the Transfer Station, 61 Ecology Drive or schedule curbside collection, Bulky Waste Permit required.

Medications:
FREE disposal of over-the-counter, prescription, pets medications and medicated lotions and ointments at East Hartford Police Department, 31 School Street. Please do not flush down toilets or dispose of down catch basins.

Metals:
Deliver for disposal at the Transfer Station, 61 Ecology Drive or for curbside collection, a Bulky Waste Permit required. Includes appliances, refrigerators with doors removed, gas grills without propane tank, bicycles, etc            

Paint Recycling:
PaintCare is a non-profit organization that has established a FREE and year-round paint recycling collection program at the Transfer Station, 61 Ecology Drive. Latex and oil based paints, deck coatings, primers, sealers, stains, shellacs, lacquers, metal coatings, rust preventatives and filed/lawn paints are all acceptable. Paper Shredding:
Saturday, May 13 from 9am-Noon participate in a FREE Paper Shredding event hosted by American Eagle Credit Financial Credit Union, 417 Main Street, East Hartford, Saturday, May 13 from 9am-Noon. 

Easter Seals located at 22 Prestige Park Circle also offers year-round paper shredding for $20 for up to 200 pounds ($0.10 per additional pound). Visit http://www.enviroshredct.com for more information.

Propane Tanks:
May be delivered to commercial establishments when you purchase a new one.

Used Oil  & Anti-freeze: 

Accepted at the Transfer Station, 61 Ecology Drive, in clear plastic containers. NO Bulky Waste Permit needed. Please do not use catch basins for disposal.
