East Hartford Fire Department and Mayor Leclerc Urge Residents to Change Batteries in Their Smoke Detectors

(October 19, 2015) East Hartford, CT –  Mayor Marcia A. Leclerc, The East Hartford Fire Department and Energizer Battery are teaming up to support a simple habit that could save lives. The department often encounters smoke detectors with old or missing batteries. The simple habit of changing your smoke detector battery when you change your clocks from daylight savings time will help protect your family. Mayor Leclerc, Energizer and the East Hartford Fire Department urge you to Change Your Clock Change Your Battery!  On November 1, when you turn your clocks back, take an extra minute to install fresh batteries into your smoke detectors.

Mayor Leclerc urged all residents about the importance of replacing the batteries in their smoke detectors.

“With working smoke detectors, injury and death to our loved ones is avoidable, so please take the time to do this quick, but important task.”

According to the latest research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, three out of five fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. It is necessary to have a working smoke detector on each floor of the home, including the basement and outside sleeping areas in the home.
